Supervision for Counsellors

Are you a counsellor or therapist looking for supervision?

Supervision for counsellors is an ethical requirement and vital for your practice.

I am a clinical PACFA registrant and prior to that I was a clinical supervisor for CAPA NSW. I supervise counsellors all around Australia via online or telephone as well as in person.

With my many years of lecturing in counselling I am familiar with many different approaches and theories of counselling, so you can be confident that I will be conversant with the way you practice during the supervision.
(*The exception to this is Gestalt therapy which is a specific therapy that I am not qualified in.)

Once during a workshop this question was poised “is the relationship with your supervisor similar to the relationship to your clients”? I had a long think about this and decided that parts of it were. In counselling and therapy it is very important to get the right “fit” for the client and the counsellor both have to feel they relate to each other via the therapeutic relationship, where confidentiality (and the limits to) are explained and  upheld, and  empathy is  present.

The  Rogerian qualities such as unconditional positive regard, being congruent etc. as well as being encouraging and supportive are all qualities that a good supervisor should possess. However a good supervisor will at times carefully challenge a supervisee to see their cases differently for their personal growth and education, a supervisor who is only supportive will not further the supervisee’s knowledge. So I believe that the answer to the question is yes it is similar in lots of ways.

As part of my Masters’s degree in Social Science (Counselling) I studied “advanced clinical supervision”. This is a part of my work that I very much enjoy.

Through my extensive experience as an individual supervisor, as well as running supervision groups, I combine my experience of counselling and my extensive knowledge from teaching counselling (to students of naturopathy and six years teaching counselling and communication to students at University) my approach will support you when presenting your cases in a non-judgemental way. I have an affordable reduced rate for those counsellors who are just starting out in private practice.

I welcome your contact to discuss your needs.

Thank you Helen for your support as my supervisor and belief in my ability, as a counsellor I appreciate your support so much

Gold Coast Qld

I have had many sessions of supervision over the last couple of years and found Helen to be knowledgeable, supportive and flexible with her availability which I appreciated. I would have no hesitation in recommending her.

Supervision with Helen supported me through many years working in the field of complex trauma. I definitely would not have lasted as long as I did without regular sessions with Helen. Helen’s level of knowledge and experience were invaluable, as was her ability to hold space and allow for reflective practice. I thoroughly recommend Helen as clinical supervisor. Thank you Helen

I have known Helen Larkey for ten years as a lecturer and counsellor. Helen makes you feel at ease with great warmth, treating people as equals and experts of their own lives and being non-judgemental. This approach is very empowering as you are free to explore options in a safe environment without being judged. Other skills that Helen brings are empathy, great listening skills and knowing that you are being heard.

B.Soc.Sci. Community Worker

Whilst studying at university I was fortunate to have Helen as my lecturer. During this time I was volunteering as a face to face counsellor and was supervised by Helen in this role. Helen was very professional and supportive, sharing her extensive knowledge in the field. I would thoroughly recommend her to anyone seeking a quality counselling, or psychotherapy supervisor
